My father's load using 40 gr of IMR 4198 shot at 1702 fps The best range load for this powder, bullet and rifle seems to be around the 45 gr of IMR 3031 mark Even though I now had loads for 4570 using these 405 gr cast bullets, I wondered what Hornady 325 gr Leverevolution ammunition would chronograph It was travelling at 15 fps For lower powered loads with 4570 Unique is the way to go 1014 grs behind gr lead bullet is a great shooter that wont kill your shoulder TWell me being me @ 75kg thought I

405 grain 45-70 load data- Sixgun wrote11 grains of Unique (loose in the case) with about any lead bullet you haveVelocity is between 1000 and 1100 I have shots tens of thousands of these loads through Trapdoors, 16's, '95 Marlins, old Sharps rifles (the one pictured in my avatar) and anything else I could find that was chambered for the 4570 I use Trail Boss for several different calibers, but 4570 is not one of them To make a long story short, the loads listed for Trail Boss and a 405 Grain bullet have a lower velocity and a higher pressure than loads woth 4064 and 45, both of which have given me excellent results in my 14 Trapdoor rifle
But, for example, this site has lots of load data and is showing 14gr of Unique under a 405gr bullet for about 1170fps, which might translate to about 1300fps or so with a 300gr bullet 4570 Government Powder Weight /Velocity Data for the 405gr FPbb Here is a thread with a lot of good information about reduced loads4570 Government 405 grain RNFP This is our favorite 45/70 load for casual plinking These bullets are custom made with a softer alloy that is ideal for the lower pressure and velocity of a proper Trapdoor load If you are a purist and can't wrap your head around shooting jacketed Trapdoor loadsthis one's for you 1,280 FPS (24″) 405Notes These loads are for all guns in GOOD CONDITION With NEVER EXCEED LOADS maintain Minimum Over All Length or longer Large Rifle primer (Modern Reloading Second Edition Richard Lee) Be Alert Publisher cannot be responsible for errors in published load data

4570 405 grain RNFP Hard Cast Bullets for Reloading This is a very accurate 4570 Cast Bullet, perfect for lever action rifles as well as single shots The 405 gr bullet has a long history as being the most popular bullet loaded for the 4570 The lube utilized on these bullets is #1 I just picked up a 99% Ruger #1 in 4570 and need some input on load data I was hoping to use 405 gr cast bullets with a gas check but am open to other successful loads I have a multitude of loading manuals, many are not current and there are so many new bullets for this calibre it makes choosing one a challengeFrom what I've read and been told, "loading a 405 gr projectile @ 00 fps has too much kick and hurts to shoot"?
Loads for 405 gr lee cast in 45/70 Jump to Latest Follow 1 10 of 10 Posts M missed_shot Registered Joined 166 Posts Discussion Starter #1 I just cast about 50 405 gr hollow base 45/70 bullets from Lee your probably using a lever gun (you never told us) With a 325 grain bullet, you can expect something in the area 1950 fps, and drop about 100fps with the 350 grain bullet I recommend the Speer 405 grain bullet Works very well in the 450 Marlin, so it should do well in the 4570 Loads for 45/70 (Note These are near MAXIMUM loads, you should use 10% less to start) Powders) Bullet sizes vary from 458″ for jacketed to 459″ for some lead in diameter and other factors, you may not get near the FPS charted It is just a guide and the reason you should start under these charges and work up
It was a black powder charge load I've shot original 4570 black powder loads with the 405 grain lead bullets with the standard Infantry 70 grain loads and they whalloped like crazy in a Carbine The 500 grain load would 'kill at one end and maim at the other'The4570 was first introduced as the45 Government for the army's new Model 1873 rifles and carbines Case length was 2100 inches for use with a 405grain roundnose leadalloy bullet of457inch diameter The initial powder charge was 70 grains of black powder Lyman 49 says reloader 7 has been a long time favorite for 4570 Lyman's # (405 grain) cast with #2 alloy data For 1873 (Trapdoor) Springfield Reloader 7 370 grains start, 390 grains max 1,578 fps from a 24" universal receiver (all use rem brass and rem 91/2 primer) No data for RX7 and this bullet in the 16 Winchester & 15
Just tried Hodgdon's midrange load for 4570 with 405g bullet in original Springfield trapdoor MV was 10 (average of 5 shots) compared to 1370 from Pinnacle loads, and benchrest groupings at 100 yards were modest (15"18" and to the right) compared to results from Pinnacle (8"10" groupings and pretty much dead on) I just picked up a Marlin 15G in 4570 Bought some dies (Hornady 3 dies), cases, primers, powder, and 405gr RNFP's I was hoping some "old timers" , wouldn't mind sharing some of there lessons learned with me4570 Government Loads 4570 Applications by M L McPherson, Tue, Synopsis Anyone who has worked with the 4570 Government with loads using blackpowder, smokeless to match blackpowder performance, or smokeless loads at higher pressure, soon learns that this cartridge offers phenomenal performanceIndeed, it will forever remain unsurpassed as

Reloader 7 for my 4570 I finally went to town and got some Reloader 7 and some remington 95 mag primers and am wanting to start working up a load When I tried it out, I had a box of PMC ammo with 405 grain soft point and they worked pretty good, so I sent off and got the dies and some Starline Brass and now heres my delimmaI think IMR4198 is a little faster so you should find specific load info for it Pretty good powder for the 4570 IMHO I use H4198 behind a 405 gr Remington, somewhere around 475 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE!

Hi gang, My son gave me a Older T/C Contender with a 10" 45/70 barrel The loads I use in my Sharps (Reloader 7 under a 405 grain lead bullet) are way to hot for this old man about took my hands off I have cast some 240 grain round nose bullets, but can't find any loading data for the lighter bullet I have listings for a 300gr jacketed45 70 Government Manufacturer Loading Data Pistol; The 1873 Springfield rifle saw minor improvements over the 1868 factory new breech loader At this time, a new cartridge was adopted, the4570 US Government The4570 fired a45 caliber 405 grain projectile over 70 grains of black powder for a muzzle velocity of roughly 10fps
This is a 350 gr gas checked bullet from a RanchDog mold and delivers just over 1000 foot pounds at 0 yards You can tailor your load to deliver 1000 foot pounds at your longest expected hunting range getting that velocity and energy with a modern 4570 is an easy task and most hunters use lighter loads anyway to get that 1000 foot pounds Either way, I'm avoiding light loads from here on out Here are the loads that actually work for me, in my 4570 BFR with a 75" barrel at 30F and 5800' elevation (Low pressure plinking load) Starline brass Federal gold medal match magnum GM215M primers Oregon Trail 405 grain 458" hard cast bullets 45 grains of Varget (started at 40, worked upOne4570 load approximates the performance of the original4570 Govt black powder loading of a 405 grain bullet (307 BC) at 1350 feet per second while the other is a 325gr Hornady LEVERevolution factory load (230 BC) The3006 Springfield load is a 150 grain Nosler Partition (387 BC) at 3,000 feet per second
